Civil War Notes: Humboldt Female College Burned - 1862

Picture
Here are some notes from the War Between the States about Humboldt, TN.

Col. Dollins was sent here in November 1862 to defend a garrison built at Humboldt. While Dollins was here he took control of the Humboldt Female College which was established in 1859 and had built a large two story building. It was used for a hospital by the Federal army in November 1862 and was burned. In the 1890's and agai
n in the early 1900's, the trustees of the College were seeking compensation from the Federal government for the building that was destroyed. G.S. Lannom, son of one of the original trustees (J.N.Lannom) was seeking this compensation in 1904.

Note: The flag pictured below was the one that was carried by the 81st Illinois. This flag was probably flown in Humboldt in 1862.
